What's Happening Downtown: MADD "Special Holiday Message"

Whichever winter holidays you celebrate, the message is essentially the same--rebirth, renewal, peace, joy hope, happiness, goodwill towards men, women and children.  We spread cheer and give presents; decorate with beautiful lights; celebrate with food and drink.

My holiday video celebrates the historic building downtown at the corner of Broadway and Houston streets.  This architectural masterpiece was built when the streets still saw horse and buggy traffic.  In 1983, it was refurbished to its present glory and renamed the One Ten Broadway.

Also in this video, we celebrate one of the tenants of One Ten Broadway--Mother's Against Drunk Driving or MADD. MADD was established in 1980 in response to personal tragedies involving drunk driving.

Since then,  MADD has become one of the premier organizations in the fight against drunk driving, underage drinking and for victims' rights.

Why am I putting a damper on holiday festivities with all this 'sober' talk?  Because it's important!  I don't want any of you to experience first-hand the tragic consequences of an accident that could have been prevented.

So, when you are putting on your red dress or gelling up the 'do--if you are going to a party with drinking, start thinking--how am I getting home safely?  Please make this message from Jennifer Northway, Executive Director of MADD South Texas, a gold star at the top of your holiday priorities.

Happy and safe holidays!
